A peek into the boudoir of fashion’s original bodacious bombshell, Sophia Loren.
Long before Sofia Vargara was tantalizing the public with her heavily accented grasp of the english language, another Sophia owned the market on bossomming bombshells. A screen gem that has inspired designers from Guess to Dolce & Gabbana, Madre Loren remains an industry muse long after her reign at the box office. After getting into Carrie Bradshaw’s undie drawer, Nordstrom asked me to put together some modern day Valentine’s Day-worthy looks inspired by some of Madre Italalia’s most jaw dropping looks.
I began my process of identifying pieces which would fit this archetype for the modern day vixen, selecting items that would embrace this woman’s most noteworthy attribute, her Kardashian-worthy curves. In an age when size 8 wasn’t the enemy and being a girl with a good set of knockers was a main requirement for leading lady camera time, Sophia dominated a genre of cinema, staring in classics like Houseboat, Marriage Italian-Style and Two Women, the later being a role that one her an Academy Award, the first ever given to an actress in a non-english speaking role.
She had this very raw, yet somehow refined sex appeal. And it showed in her looks.
Guido, Guido, Guido
Inspired by the Italian films that built her career, I choose pieces I could imagine wearing a date night at Eataly, Mario Batali’s New York based love letter to the cuisines of Sophia’s motherland. I skipped the approach of going classic 1950?s house dress and instead upped this look with this Herve Leger A-Line Bandage dress, a Natasha Couture clutch [a steal at $58], and a pair of B Brian Atwood Deliziosa Booties. Underneath it all, I’d envision a pair of Chantelle Intimates ‘Paris Paris’ Tanga panties, for a little lacy surprise underneath this modern look.
Being ready for the bedroom isn’t a chore, it’s an art. Sophia new this better than anyone. Lingerie might be the icing on the cake, but accessories like long white opera gloves, a oversized sun hat, sky high stilettos and a string of pearls are the scoop of ice cream, whipped cream and guilt-free second helping. I can’t imagine a better dessert.
To get the look, I paired a Chantelle Intimates ‘Paris Paris’ waist cincher, a set of Finale Opera length gloves, a stunning Majorica Double Row baroque pearl necklace, an Eric Javits ‘Maribel’ sun hat, and a pair of instantly sexyfied pair of Jimmy Choo ‘Kera’ platforms. These Wolford tights finish this look.
Keep ‘em Guessing
Inspired by the denim brands 2008 campaign shot by Bryan Adams and featuring dopplegangling model Line Gost, the campaign set a tone for Guess, not found in previous campaigns dedicated to Anna Nicole Smith and Claudia Schiffer. Sparked by this current take on Sophia, I paired some rag & bone/JEAN cutoffs with a BP. boyfriend tee. Under it, a Chatelle Intimates ‘Icone’ bra.
To add a little more to the look, I added two Ariella Collection bangles, the Pave Station and the Love message in gold. For a little drama to this laid back look, I’d suggest these Steve Madden red, studded sandals and a bag to carry around the only things you need when looking effortless, a cell phone bag. This one by Marc by Marc Jacobs is a fave.
