Sarah Burton and Spanx Make the TIME 100

In all of fashion, only two industry names were considered “influential” enough to make TIME‘s annual 100 list — Sarah and Sara. Alexander McQueen‘s Sarah Burton, whose wedding gown for Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge n?e Kate Middleton had the whole world talking , and Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx, which had the whole world cinching.

And another member of the S-club, Sarah Jessica Parker, wrote the profile on Burton for the magazine, in which she mused, “A royal wedding dress that could never live up to the impossible dream. But it did.” And how.

Katie Couric handled the delivery of Blakely’s kind words, if you can call them that: “The comic irony of Spanx is that the woman who became a billionaire after inventing them doesn’t even need them. Poor thing, she was a size 2 when the idea hit her.” Sounds like someone’s Spanx are rubbing them the wrong way.

The full TIME 100 list will be revealed later today, while the TIME 100 Gala will be held on Tuesday with a performance by Rihanna, a keynote address by Secretary of Shots Hillary Clinton and some 350 guests arriving on not one but three red carpets at Jazz at Lincoln Center. [WWD]
