Five Minutes With Julien Macdonald New!

As anyone who's ever seen an episode of Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model will know, Julien Macdonald isn't one to keep his thoughts to himself - which is why we jumped at the chance to ask him about his latest venture, a collaboration with mega-market Asda. The designer has created a bag exclusively for the store and, what's more, it costs just ??2.50, with 80p going to its Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign.

Fasten your seatbelts...

How did the collaboration with Asda come about?
I was approached by Asda to collaborate on this campaign and decided to create an affordable canvas bag design for the Tickled Pink Campaign. I always enjoy collaborating with charities, especially when it's for such an important cause.

Can you tell us a bit about the bag itself?
This bag is in my signature animal print design collaged with butterflies, bright pinks and blues. I think it is full of life and a really fun bag to carry around. I'm bringing glamour to the aisles of the supermarket! Reusable shopping bags don't have to be boring. It was important to me to create something iconic that women will be proud to use, but also make a bold and colourful statement to raise breast cancer awareness.

You've just shown your spring/summer 2013 collection at London Fashion Week. What was the inspiration behind it?
My new spring/summer 2013 collection is all about being soft and romantic. It has a fabulous mixture of  bright and neutral colours that are fantastic for summer!

If you could cast any of the current BINTM contenders in a show of yours right now, who would you choose, and why?
It's too hard to pick one  as all the girls are fantastic. They all have great personalities; it's a real joy to watch the transformation of such young beautiful girls into catwalk models.

Very diplomatic! Speaking of personalities, there are lots of big ones on the panel. How do you cope with the pressure?
We are all great friends who hang out together. There's no pressure, actually - it is just always such a giggle. We all get on so well as friends so we just relax and have lots of laughter.

You're known for speaking your mind. Where does that come from?
I'm an honest person. In this industry you need to be honest, but I'm also positive and happy and I think it is important to stand up for what you believe in.

And, finally, you're clearly a very busy man. What do you do to relax?
I love to go running with my miniature Doberman in Hyde Park - that's something that helps me to relax - as well as having a nice lunch with friends in Notting Hill before strolling around Portobello Vintage Antique market.

Julien Macdonald's limited edition bag is available exclusively in Asda from now until the end of October, with 80p of its ??2.50 costs going to the store's Tickled Pink charity campaign for breast cancer research.
