Art by Design: Mark Rothko Inspired Gucci

More than a colorist or an abstract expressionist, Mark Rothko felt he conveyed “basic human emotion” in the brushstrokes of his color blocked paintings. Rothko has said, “The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them. And if you, as you say, are moved only by their color relationship, then you miss the point.” Likewise, you may think a Gucci color-blocked shift is solely about the hues, but it is about the emotions harnessed by the wearer and exhibited to the world. With a border of golden orangen accessories, we may emit a similar glowing aura as this Rothko painting.

Start with a color blocked dress. This well matched shift by Gucci is boxy with similarly proportioned stripes to the Rothko.  $1,990 Net-a-Porter

Now frame the dress in an outline of orangey-gold.
