Christopher Kane's six-season collaboration with Versus Versace has come to an end.
The hotshot Scottish designer has been at the helm of the label's diffusion line since 2009, firmly establishing him as a heavyweight talent in the fashion world, and Donatella Versace's prot?©g?©. The official announcement from the house of Versace today states that Kane is leaving "to focus on the development of his own line" - although it fuels rumours in fashion circles that he is tipped to take the top spot at Balenciaga recently vacated by Nicolas Ghesqui??re.
Versace is using Kane's departure to reposition the brand altogether, with a focus on digital innovation and a move away from catwalk shows in favour of 'presentation-events', the first of which will take place in New York in the spring. Instead of appointing a big name replacement, Donatella will work closely with a "pool of young creative talents" - from designers and stylists to creative in the broader sense - to create capsule collections and limited edition products.
"This is a very exciting development for Versus, and I'm thrilled to be engaged in such a major shake-up of the fashion world's rules," says Versace. "I want to thank Christopher for his contribution to Versus over 6 seasons, during which I have been able to appreciate his extraordinary talent. Working with young talented people, and see them grow and develop as I have seen Christopher do over these years, is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I wish him all the best for the development of his own line. He will always have my total support."
